Neighborhood Gallery

847 Hayes Street

Located just south of Pacific Heights and northeast of Cole Valley, Alamo Square is home to one of the world's most famous views. The Painted Ladies that run along Steiner and face Alamo Square Park make up one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, so much so that the area was nicknamed Postcard Row. Visitors and prospective residents may also recognize Alamo Square as the setting for the popular sitcom Full House.

However, there is much more to this neighborhood than just a photo opportunity. Despite being somewhat off the beaten path, Alamo Square attracts its fair share of tourists, who can often be spotted strolling with cameras while viewing such historic treasures as the Westerfield Mansion, the Chateau Tivoli, and the Archbishop's Mansion.

The heart of the neighborhood is Alamo Square Park, which is located in between Fulton and Hayes Street. Park amenities include a dog run, playground and popular tennis courts, all with incredible panoramic views of San Francisco. Additionally, a $5.3 Million renovation was completed in 2017. The original plan was to update the irrigation systems, but the project expanded into adding new trees, new walking paths, and even a new bathroom near the playground. The renovation truly demonstrates the passion and pride Alamo Square residents take in their neighborhood.

The streets are lined with some of the city's finest examples of Victorian architecture, as this area was the nexus of a preservation boom that swept the city in the 1970s. Centrally located, residents have easy access to freeways and downtown; the Central Freeway 101 is just one mile from Alamo Square, making it easy to commute to/from the Silicon Valley. Since the neighborhood is centrally located, downtown and several popular neighborhoods and landmarks are within a short ride on one of several Muni lines that service the area. Presidio and Industrial Light and Magic are only a 30 minute ride away, as are the Financial District and Google Headquarters.

When it's time to unwind, you can visit one of the growing number of hip restaurants, clubs, bar, or bistros that line lively Divisadero Street. Some of the local favorites in the area include:
The Mill: The combination of hand-roasted coffee beans brewed to perfection along with aromatic baked bread make this a great spot to start your morning or jumpstart your afternoon.
Ju-Ni: An upscale bistro serving some of the finest omakase sushi. They only have 12 seats in the dining area, but guests are treated to a culinary experience they won’t soon forget.
Nopa: Whether you’re looking for a relaxed dinner with a significant other, a vibrant happy hour with friends or co-workers, or a late-night meal made from the freshest ingredients, Nopa is the place to visit.
